As part of my drive to start having the occasional ramble in the natural beauty in the hills surrounding Greater Manchester and Cheshire, one warm day, I decided to go and see Dovestones Reservoir!
I’d heard lots of people describe it in a positive sense, so on a whim I drove up there, to see what the hype was all about, and I was not disappointed! Coming from Stockport way, I drove past Ashton, then started the climb. Once you start to head through Stalybridge, into Mossley, you begin to see some of the older stone buildings, really nice places to drive through, plus of course the hills, makes for quite a visual!
Once parked up at the venue, you get a feeler for the size of the place, but wait until you get off the car park, the up the embankment where the whole place opens up to the eyes! Rolling hills, Crags, Stones, waterways It’s a feat of natural wonder!
While you walk around the main reservoir, you mostly always have the water in sight (see photos below), and at the far end, there’s also more to discover, not that I’ve had chance yet, I spent too much time gawping at the beauty of the surroundings of the main event, I've decided to go back again as I fancied a ramble up some of the hills as well, as I want to see the view from the tops and discover what's up there!
Dovestones is part of a water system, with three more reservoirs feeding in, the day I went was calm and warm, but I’ve seen footage of the place raging, see the video on a day it goes a bit crazy!
There’s even what seems a beach, and woods, a whole range of beautiful views, well worth a visit, and if you do go during the summer, it’s an idea to buy an ice-cream, while you let the AC cool down the car, I did!
See more of the photos below, and try a visit, I'll be back to discover Yeoman and Greenfield Reservoirs, and of course, up to the tops to see what's up there!
